Crane Models in 1:50 – the Royal Class

No other model type demands as much from the manufacturer as a crane. A telescopic boom must interlock cleanly in several segments, the rope must run over real pulleys, and the outriggers must actually support the model. A 1:50 scale crane model is therefore less a collectible and more a functional miniature device.

Mobile Crane, Crawler Crane, Truck-Mounted Crane – What Suits You

Mobile cranes are the entry point and the largest group: all-terrain chassis with multiple axles, telescopic boom, often with an additional jib. Those who collect crane companies usually collect here.

Crawler cranes are the heavyweights. Lattice boom instead of telescopic, ballast, sometimes over a meter in height. Challenging to assemble, but the showpiece of any display case.

Mobile construction cranes and tower cranes work on construction sites rather than in heavy transport – and fit dimensionally directly with your construction machinery.

What to Look for When Buying

The boom: It should extend in all segments and stay in position. A telescoping boom that retracts on its own is the most common annoyance with inexpensive models.

The rope guide: Real rope over real pulleys, not painted on. With good models, the hook can be wound up and down.

The outrigger system: Extendable sliding beams with pads. They determine whether the model stands stably with the boom extended.

The material: Die-cast zinc for the chassis and superstructure. For lattice booms, plastic is common and also sensible – otherwise the model would tip over due to its own weight.

Don't Underestimate Space and Assembly

A crane model requires more display case space than any other machine. With the boom extended, it quickly reaches height, and with the outriggers extended, it reaches width. If space is tight, display the crane in transport condition – this is also a legitimate motif and even looks better next to a low loader.

Buying Crane Models – In Brief

Scale 1:50, die-cast zinc, extendable booms, real rope guidance, custom paint finishes of real crane companies. Also suitable: truck models for the fleet and accessories for ballast and staging. Shipping from Germany, collector-friendly packaging. Not suitable for children under 14 years.
