1:64 scale model cars – the scale that fits in every home
1:64 is the scale with the lowest barrier to entry and the highest potential for addiction. A car measures around seven centimeters, costs a fraction of a 1:18 model, and doesn't need its own display case – you can fit twenty on a shelf that would hold three models of a larger scale. Those who collect 1:50 construction machinery know the problem of space. In 1:64, that problem doesn't arise for ten years.
Why 1:64 in particular
The scale originates from the American toy tradition and has developed into its own collector's niche in recent years. The difference from a toy lies not in the size, but in the manufacturing: die-cast zinc instead of solid plastic, rubber tires on separate rims, inserted windows, clean pad printing instead of stickers. On good models, even hoods and doors open – a real rarity at seven centimeters.
How to recognize a good 1:64 model
The wheels. The quickest test of all. A separately manufactured tire on its own rim distinguishes a collector's model from a toy, where both are a single piece.
The printing. Starting numbers, sponsor logos, license plates: sharp edges, no misalignment. For racing liveries, this is the most important quality indicator.
The ride height. A model that sits too high on its wheels immediately looks wrong – especially for vehicles with lowered real-life counterparts.
The packaging. 1:64 models are usually delivered in blisters or clear boxes. If you want to resell later, keep them.
What we have in 1:64
The assortment currently comes entirely from Pop Race and includes around 57 models. The focus is on the tuning and racing scene: Japanese modifications, Porsches in restomod and widebody versions, plus individual European and American models – Aston Martin Valkyrie, Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4, Ford Mustang GT500, VW Golf GTI MK2.
Counted by original brand, Nissan leads with 15 models, ahead of Porsche (12) and Toyota (11). Prices range between around €18 and €35 – the majority are between €19 and €23.
Two ways to build a 1:64 collection
By model: all generations of a car – for instance, the Nissan Skyline is available here as the Hakosuka, the Kenmeri KPGC110, and the C210, three series of the same line.
By scene: a theme instead of a brand. The Japanese import and drift scene is collected under JDM & Drift.
