Heavy-duty transport and low-loader models 1:50 – the elite discipline on the road
A heavy-duty transport is not a vehicle, but a combination: the tractor unit, trailer, and load must match one another. This is precisely why this category is the most interesting for collectors who already have construction machinery on their shelves – the low-loader is the part that turns individual models into a scene. We have 20 models in stock, all in 1:50 scale.
The trailer manufacturers are the actual catalog
Nooteboom is the most strongly represented with six models – as a Flexitrailer, as a low loader, and as a MANOOVR, the modular system with steered axles. Goldhofer appears four times on our shelves, including the Arcus PK6 in a six-axle version and two cable reel transporters. In addition, there is Schwarzmüller (2) with low-loader trailers, Faymonville with the Variomax, and Scheuerle with an STB 320 girder bridge.
Anyone collecting for a specific transport company searches by these names – not by the cab.
The tractor units
Five Mercedes-Benz, four Scania, four MAN, three Volvo, and one DAF. The heavy-duty versions carry an abbreviation in their name that makes the difference: the Mercedes Actros MP5 SLT and the MAN TG GX are heavy-haulage tractors with an additional axle and reinforced drivetrain, not standard long-haul trucks.
From individual parts to a complete train
Three paths lead to this category. Complete combinations of tractor unit and trailer, pre-matched to one another. Solo tractor units that you combine with a trailer of your choice – such as the Mercedes-Benz Arocs heavy-haulage tractor in silver (78001/11). And solo trailers such as the two Schwarzmüller low-loader trailers under 98033/0 and 98033/01, which fit behind a vehicle you already own.
The numbers follow the familiar patterns: WSI with a hyphen, Conrad with a slash. The same Nooteboom MANOOVR combination is listed as 01-5225 for Thömen or 01-5265 for Gruber, depending on the transport company.
What to look for in a low-loader
The gooseneck: On high-quality models, it is detachable, just like the prototype when loading cargo.
The axles: Steered axles on a model are not a toy feature, but the hallmark of modern modular trailers. On multi-axle trailers, they should be steerable.
The ramps: Whether they are included and can be deployed determines whether you can set up a loading scene or just a moving train.
The length: The point most often underestimated. A multi-axle train in 1:50 easily exceeds half a meter – measure your shelf board before you order.
Buying heavy-duty transport models – in a nutshell
1:50 scale, die-cast zinc, detachable goosenecks, steered axles, company liveries. Prices currently range from around €64 for a single combination to €1,250 for the Scheuerle set with girder bridge. You can find suitable loads in the construction machinery, excavator, and mobile crane sections – that is also where the two Liebherr LTM 1750-9.1s are, which are intended as cargo for a heavy-duty transport. More broadly, the vehicles can be found under truck models, with ballast and load securing items in accessories. Shipping from Germany, packed for collectors. Not suitable for children under 14 years of age.
