COBI Aviation – Aircraft Made from Building Blocks
Aviation is our largest of the three COBI categories, with around 25 construction sets. The focus is on military models, alongside which there are commercial aircraft and a space exploration model.
What you will find here
Jets and fighter aircraft form the core – the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, the Panavia Tornado IDS, the Eurofighter Typhoon in several versions, and the Lockheed C-130 Hercules as a transport aircraft. Three sets carry a Top Gun license.
Commercial aircraft are the exception, but are striking nonetheless: the Boeing 747 in the Air Force One livery and the Concorde G-BBDG – one of the few aircraft of its type that you can get as a building set at all.
Space exploration is represented by one model, the Space Shuttle Atlantis.
The scale is in the title – and it varies
COBI does not build its aviation line to a uniform scale. The jets are predominantly in 1:48, the Hercules in 1:61, the Boeing 747 in 1:144, the Concorde in 1:95, and the Space Shuttle in 1:100. This means: Two models placed side by side are not comparable in scale, even if they appear similar in size. If you want to set up a display case uniformly, go by the scale in the title, not the price.
The article number
COBI numbers without a slash: four digits for most aircraft (5920 for the F-14, 5853 for the Tornado, 1917 for the Concorde), five digits for the large commercial aircraft (26610 for Air Force One). The same model appears in several versions – the Eurofighter Typhoon is available as 5843 “GiNA”, 5848 “Typhoon G”, and 5849 “F2000”.
What to look out for
Printed parts: National insignia, squadron badges, and markings are printed on COBI sets, not applied with stickers. For an aircraft with many markings, this is the biggest visible difference compared to other building block brands.
Wingspan: A jet in 1:48 is significantly larger when built than the box suggests. Measure the footprint before you order – especially for the transport aircraft.
Construction time: Large aircraft sets are evening projects spanning several days. With these models, that is part of the product, not a disadvantage.
